------------------------------------------------------------ README for InDefense's Achilles'Shield 3.0 for Windows 98/NT April 2000 Copyright (c) 2000 InDefense, Inc. ------------------------------------------------------------ This document provides complementary or late-breaking information to supplement the documentation. You can also look at the InDefense Web site for the latest information (www.indefense.com). HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT Readme.txt is located in the Achilles'Shield setup directory. To print Readme.txt, open it in Notepad or another word processor, then use the Print command on the File menu. WHAT IS ACHILLES'SHIELD? Achilles'Shield is an advanced Internet security protection application specifically designed to stop new viruses and malicious code. It can be used alone, as the only virus and malware protection, or it can be used together with a leading anti-virus scanner and provide "protection between updates," when the scanner does not yet have the new virus's code in its database. Achilles'Shield stops viruses, Trojans and worms by their distinct behavior, not by their signature code, and, therefore, it does not have a database of anti-virus signatures that requires updating. Because it can be used as added protection, if you have a scanner, we recommend you keep it alive. Please scroll down for more information on product compatibility and installation instructions when loading Achilles'Shield on computers with other antivirus products. TO INSTALL THIS SOFTWARE 1. After extracting the program files to your hard drive, run the SETUP.EXE program. 2. Follow the instructions in dialog boxes. A typical installation will install to the C:\Program Files\InDefense\Achilles'Shield directory. 3. Reboot the machine after installation. 4. Report problems as follows: - Send e-mail to support@indefense.com - In US and Canada, call toll-free at 1-877-472-3372 (1-877-4 SAFEPC) - Or call 1-831-471-1413 PRODUCT COMPATIBILITY We’ve tested Achilles'Shield and leading antivirus scanners running on the same PC and found it compatible with McAfee VirusScan 4.0, Norton AntiVirus 5.0, PC-Cillin 6.0, InnoculateIt 5. We continue to perform compatibility tests and will publish the results on our website (www.indefense.com). DUAL-BOOT INSTALLATION To install Achilles'Shield on a dual-boot PC you must specify separate installation directories for each Operating System (OS). To share the report file and/or temporary directory, use the Achilles'Shield Options application that is located in the Achilles'Shield Start Menu folder (Default is Start->Programs->Achilles'Shield->Options). To share the same data files between the different OS's requires manual registry modifications. This is not necessary if you do not want to share the data files between the different OS's. WARNING: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall the OS. InDefense, Inc. cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of the Registry Editor can be solved. Use the Registry Editor at your own risk. For each OS, execute the following steps: 1) Run REGEDIT.EXE (i.e.: Registry Editor) from the Start->Run menu. 2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\InDefense\InDefense\3.0\Macro. 3) Modify the key value "Precert" to a fully qualified filename that is available to all OS's. 4) Modify the key value "RestPlace" to a fully qualified filename that is available to all OS's. 5) Modify the key value "Storage" to a fully qualified filename that is available to all OS's. KNOWN PROBLEMS Symptom: During setup, the following error message appears: "The file OLEAUT32.DLL is out of date. This program requires a newer version." Platform: Windows 98 "First Edition" Cause: The error message occurs when the version of OLEAUT32.DLL on the computer is older than version 2.40.4275. Certain files critical to the installation process require version 2.40.4275 or later. Resolution: (1) Select OK to the above message. This installs the newer version of OLEAUT32.DLL on the computer. (2) Complete the installation and reboot. The operating system must be restarted to update OLEAUT32.DLL correctly. (3) Restart Achilles'Shield installation. Achilles'Shield automatically updates itself and completes the installation process normally. ========== Symptom: During setup, the following error message appears (where nnn is some number): "Ordinal nnn could not be located in the dynamic link library MAPI32.DLL." Platform: Windows 98/NT Cause: Achilles'Shield e-mail client extension requires MAPI32.DLL. This error may occur if the file MAPI32.DLL installed in the System32 directory is not from Microsoft or has been altered by some third party software. Some e-mail/fax software products distribute a specialized version of MAPI32.DLL that is not 100% compatible with the version shipped with Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Office. Resolution: (1) Determine if the other software product can be installed using a version of MAPI that comes from Microsoft. (2) Prevent Achilles'Shield from installing the e-mail client extension. To do this go to the Achilles'Shield setup directory and edit the file Setup.ini (nb: If Achilles'Shield is on a CDROM, copy the setup directory to your HD). In the section [Options], edit the line: DisableEmailClientExtension=N to DisableEmailClientExtension=Y Run Achilles'Shield Setup.exe from the directory with the modified Setup.ini. ========== Symptom: After removing macros from an Excel or Word file, and then modifying and saving it with Excel 97 SR2 or Word 97 SR2, you cannot restore the macros. Platform: Windows 98/NT Cause: File storage formats changed between different versions of Office applications. Macros can only be restored if the file format version does not change. Resolution: The development team is investigating this problem. ========== Symptom: Removing macros from an Excel 2000 or Word 2000 file, and then modifying and saving it with Excel 2000 or Word 2000, you cannot restore the macros with Achilles'Shield. Platform: Windows 98/NT Resolution: The development team is investigating this problem. ====== As of 4-2000 ======
